The Amsterdam Getaway

Last weekend me and my beloved girlfriend went for a short getaway to Amsterdam. We’ve both been there a couple of times on various occasions before and it seemed like the perfect place to forget the world for a couple of days…

We stayed clear of all the usual tourist attractions, museums with endless lines at the box office, Italian restaurants blatently offering a Tourist Menu for €19.99 (yikes!!!). Instead we drank a lot of Dutch beer and walked the city, through the bad and the good districts, had a look at all the little things. I was actually kind of hyped to take another shot at street photography and once again realized that it just isn’t my part of the game. I missed my lights and the Ranger unit… Each to his own I suppose. So I resigned to some cheesy Kodak Moments and clichée shots of Amsterdam. Below are a few…

Might do well on a postcard perhaps…

Classic A’dam bycicle on bridge shot… mind you, without the bridge in frame :-)
More after the jump!

Bit of architecture in the northern docks…

Happy moment for in-frame layering: Detail of house boat in the forground, little afternoon leisure scene (on house boat) in the background, with the coincidental passing of… yes, another boat in the mid plane.

I think there was something about the clouds when I took this frame… dunno.

Amsterdam Centraal Station: In desparate craving for the all Dutch Hagen Dasz ice cream (which is surprisingly hard to find in A’dam) we ventured to the main station, thinking that if anything we would find it there. We ended up with 2 scoops of the all American Ben & Jerry’s…

Charming to me are the crooked houses in Amsterdam (which in this case only partly yield to the 24mm lens!) Kinda makes you feel like in a Tim Burton film… nevermind the sunshine.

For a lil’ Gothica I give you this! The building reminded me of the one in the first Ghostbusters movie, the one where Mrs Weaver goes haywire on the roof… marshmallow goo… gate keeper… all that.

I’m rather fond of this one. Taken on Sunday at lunch (a.k.a Heineken) in a cute bistro in the lovely Jordaan district. Reflections of the little square outside, bald man entering, sugar on the table… the story unfolds…

And finally a most charming portrait of me, taken by my beloved Ea.

A very pleasant trip. But the weight of the ol’ 5D was a bit of a burden. Kind of makes me wanna get one of those cute little Canon G9’s… After all, I was just a tourist that weekend… No need to impress with the gear :-)

Schon verrückt, wo man so schnell hinfliegen kann an einem Wochenende! Auch ohne Ranger-Unit wie immer sehr gelungene Aufnahmen (von wegen cheesy). Muss mir dieses A’dam auch mal reinziehen!
    Gruss, Martin
